Remembering beloved Treasures

Vintage Toys Selection
A trip down memory lane

As the Christmas date fast approaches I find myself nostalgic for a more innocent time. Sentimentally voyaging back to the era when toys didn’t always need batteries or an electrical cable too weave their magical spell on a youthful mind.

Though I was a child of the 1970’s it many of the amusements I received as a sapling were decidedly older than myself. I still remember the wonderment of hand carved wooden trinkets like cars and animals.

Could it be learning was once fun?

I told of my adoration for the mystifying yo-yo in a previous post, along those same lines marbles, jacks and a barrel of monkeys also left me spellbound as a pre-pubescent.

Board games were a constant source of distraction and friendly family competition. Chess developed problem solving skills and cognitive thought while learning the dictionary with lengthy scrabble challenges. Mentally exhausting games of Backgamon and Monopoly led into snakes and ladders or battleships.

The birth of the Sci Fi age brought with it toy robots and spaceships that catered to my already obsessive interest in space and the universe. Walking with a whir, lights flashing I seem to recall a siren wailing as well.

The suspense and excitement of winding up a boisterous Jack-In-The-Box always captivated my attention, testing my will and determination to not flinch as good ole jack left his home with a sudden burst through the doors.

My sister always yearned for a rocking horse, an item that never seems to drift out of favour. A finely crafted model still catches the eye, a testament to the talented builder and shaper.

From my own generation I garnered hours of rivetting adventures with my Steve Austin Six Million Dollar man doll complete with interactive bionic vision, bionic hearing and an exposable bionic arm. Imaginary stunts with Evil Kneivel and his bike equally satisfying

Now I’m not saying that a good Playstation Game or any other technological marvel cannot entertain but sometimes the simplest creations can inspire the same sense of awe and hypnotising charm.
