Old School Guide to the Races
February 3rd 2008 09:28
The idea of race has been mixing around ever since people noticed that other people didn't look the same. According to Wikipedia, even the ancient Egyptians were prejudiced against the Egyptians that were darker or lighter than the ones in power:
When the European countries were racing around the world, trying to set up as many colonies as possible, they had their own standard of races, with, themselves, naturally, at the top, and everyone else below them.
A fine example of this flawed understanding of human classification is this scan of an old textbook:
Ah! The majestic Anglo-Saxon at the top! Just below him, the Arabs and the Indians, who fit into the Caucasian category.
Strangely, a separate category for the Scottish Highlander... perhaps showing the strife in the British Isles when this chart was made?
"When the lighter ancient Egyptians were in power they called the darker group the "the evil race of Ish" while when the darker ancient Egyptians were in power they called the lighter group the "the pale, degraded race of Arvad"."
