How To Spot A Fake Designer Handbag

December 5th 2009 19:37

Do you find it difficult to spot a designer handbag nowadays? You see, most women seem to wear the fakes or replica counterparts of these designer handbags. Even the wealthy now can be seen with these fake handbags because they assume that most people cannot tell the difference between a fake and the authentic item anyway.

Be aware that there are a lot of good replica handbags out there trying to be sold as authentic. Manufacturers of these fake or replica handbags have improved in their craftsmanship matching their goods exactly to the originals and even comes complete with serials numbers, certificate of authenticity, and receipts. It is so easy to be fooled.

When I came back from a recent overseas trip, I cannot help but notice another passenger going through customs with several fake designer handbags. The handbags looked authentic and came complete with packaging and receipts brandishing the designer label. However, their quality was like a big question mark. Even customs officers realised this upon closer inspection of the items and decided to check if the serial numbers and receipts are indeed counterfeits.

Now, I will have to admit. I have done this before. I have bought something from overseas. It may not be the real thing, but at least I knew what I was getting and that I was not completely ripped off.

Spotting a fake designer handbag primarily comes from product knowledge. You need to actually see the real thing first at a store and know what it looks like. If the handbag is not yet available for preview, then look at fashion magazines or websites for useful product information and confirm the handbag style, dimensions and recommended retail price. Do your homework always, and research about the handbag.

It will be easy for you to spot a fake designer handbag if you inspect the handbags closely and following these guidelines:

Firstly, fabric quality is a big factor. Most designers use high end fabrics. If the fabric looks dodgy, then it is definitely a fake. Check out the internal lining. It should include the designer brand and serial code. However, be aware of some exceptions. For instance, LV handbags do not have an internal lining.

Secondly, look at the detailing. Stitching is a big giveaway when spotting a fake. Most designer handbags have perfect stitching. It is because stitching is done over more than once, so the stitching is flawless and durable, with no threads hanging out. Also, check the craftsmanship on the handles, zippers, attachable straps and even the dust bag. All these should be superbly high quality.

And lastly, before purchasing from a store, first verify that the retail store is an authorised stockist of the designer label. If the store is not, then they are not authorised to sell the products of the designer.

As customers, we have the right to know exactly what we are paying for. If you have been fooled into purchasing something and turned out to be not authentic, contact your local consumer association for advice. Sometimes, it can even turn out as simple as letting the individual or company you have purchased the item from of your disappointment and settling the matter with them. Most sellers know that it is illegal to sell fake or counterfeit products but still do it because they sometimes get away with it.

Remember to do your research first before you jump into purchasing that expensive designer handbag and follow the simple guidelines. It will steer you away from a bad shopping experience. Shopping is meant to be fun and rewarding, not feel deceived and mislead. Shop wisely.
