Bettie Page - Sex Goddess
Bettie Page will forever be remembered for her fetish pin up pictures from the 1950’s. A natural underground progression from the Hollywood bombshells like Jane Russell, Mae West etc, before Playboy, Penthouse and pornography in general hit the mainstream culture, her image was cutting edge.
Causing controversy and considered smut, now viewed through modern eyes there is an underlying innocence to the overt sexuality of her famous photographs.
Born in Nashville Tennessee in 1923, she came from a broken home and had to learn responsibility at a young age. Voted most likely to Succeed in High school Bettie was an intelligent teen who excelled in the debate club.
Learning independence through her choirs she idolized the Hollywood beauties of the era and taught herself the art of make-up, hair and even made her own clothes. These are skills that served her well later on photo shoots where she made her own wardrobe and styled her hair and applied her own cosmetics.
An aspiring starlet after earning her bachelor of the Arts degree she travelled the U.S on a search for work and knowledge of the world. After divorcing her first husband and failing to make it in L.A she eventually moved to New York City with dreams of becoming a Broadway star.
In 1950 she met a Jerry Tibbs, a police officer with a panache for photography and soon he convinced a 27 year old Betty to shoot her first modelling portfolio. Though she did appear in off Broadway productions and even on the Jackie Gleason Television show, it was the semi nude shoots that paid the bills. She even made three films Striporama(1953), Varietease (1954) and Teaserama (1955).
By 1957 Page was going through a crisis of faith and come out the other side as a born again Christian. Quitting the industry at the peak of her stardom and amputating her past life, there is an enigmatic quality that has followed her name ever since,
In the 1980’s though a cult following had snowballed to culminate in a full blown revival of Bettie Page memorabilia that continues to this day.
This is a fantastic interview Bettie Page done in 1997 with her telling the story of her life.
Here is some footage of the indelible Miss Page at work

Yes, I noticed that too. It seemed like it was advertised for quite a while at The Dendy before it came out and then it disappear quite quickly. But, I would say that it would still be good to see on DVD.
