Blazing Kitten
As a preteen the first time I saw Ann-Margaret starring opposite Elvis in Viva Las Vegas certain feelings were aroused that I didn’t quite understand. My mouth hung open, eyes bulged and a strange sensation tingled in unmentionable areas. Back then it was obviously the combination of her carved by the hands of god Dancers legs, curvaceous accessories and bubbling personality that enticed a simple minded lad.
Stunningly beautiful, over the years seeing many of her films, my appreciation expanded to account for her obvious skills in front of the camera as an entertainer. Winning 5 Golden Globes, nominated for most other industry accolades during her career, she was cast to a type. Seldom forced to dig into her psyche for motivation, instead she capitalized on her electric energy for song and dance.
Born in Sweden in 1941 this future euro sex bomb grew up in a small lumberjack town. The family moved to the US in 1946 and it wasn’t long before they discovered Ann’s innate dance ability that saw her easily replicate choreographed moves.
After travelling across the country as part of a dance ensemble it was at 19 that Ann caught the eye of Paramount Pictures and signed a 7 year contract. Making her debut in Pocketful of Miracles and then overnight was recognized for her memorable turn in State Fair (1962). Further notice came with her next job, the musical Bye Bye Birdie which was followed by Viva Las Vegas in 1964.
Quickly an affair with the King began that would last a year and make her one of the most discussed stars in the world. Wiggling and shaking together Ann was labelled “The Female Elvis” because of her equally sensual style.
That same year the cult favourite Kitten with A Whip was released, earning a whole different sort of attention. Working constantly other notable parts came in Once A Thief opposite Alain Delon and The Cincinnati Kid with Steve McQueen. The Swinger, Tommy, R.P.M starring Anthony Quinn, teaming with Jack Nicholson for Carnal Knowledge and Neil Simon’s The Cheap Detective.
Packing headturning, explosive charisma Ann-Margaret still commands the screen when watching her classics. She has 3 movies due out in 2008 and as a personal favourite leading lady, she may not have been taken seriously but deserves more credit than just being labelled “sex on legs”.
From 1994, here is an emotional interview talking about Elvis that spotlights Ann's intensely private nature.
