Angie Dickinson – Sultry Dominance
“I dress for women, and undress for men.” - Angie
Smart, Sexy and ice cool, back in the 1950’s and 60’s few women carried more power of presence or erotic unattainability than Angie Dickinson, she was even rumoured to have had an affair with JFK.
“No question, the more powerful men are, the more sexy they are.” - Angie
Proving herself a reliable and versatile actress, Angie’s film career saw her memorably appear opposite some of the biggest stars of the era including John Wayne, Lee Marvin, Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando and many more.
Earning her place in pop culture as Leann “Pepper” Anderson in Police Women, as a child Dickinson wanted to be a writer. She graduated college with a Business Degree in 1954. However after successfully dominating the Beauty Pagant circuit she made the transition to television instead and guest starred on hit shows like Gunsmoke, Perry Mason, The Fugitive and Dr Kildare.
Her first classic role was in Howard Hawkes Rio Bravo and she quickly garnered a reputation for being one of the guys. Able to dish it out and take a hit, hard drinking willing to roll with the punches.. Renowned as one of the only females allowed to join the notorious boozing Sinatra Rat Pack, she appeared in Oceans 11.
Determined to stay away from the Marilyn Monroe bombshell image she had an edgy strength of character, tough and enigmatic with sensual delivery that garnered respect from the industry and got her hired by legendary Directors including Sam Fuller (China Gate), Don Siegel (The Killers), John Boorman (Point Blank) and Arthur Penn (The Chase).
A reluctant sex bomb one of her finest screen characterizations can be seen as the adulterous wife to Lee Marvin in John Boorman’s Point Blank.
In 1974 she caused a stir as Big Bad Mamma because she appeared nude onscreen. The heightened exposure led to more work and eventually casting in the TV show that she will forever be associated.
A positive role model of female empowerment with Police Woman Dickinson’s star went supernova. By the 1980’s she returned to the bigscreen again, most notably in Brian De Palma’s Dressed to Kill.
They don’t make em like Angie anymore, sassy and sultry her appeal has never dwindled and she remains one of the most beautiful performers I have ever laid eyes on.
