Vintage Culture - May 2010

Recently, my friend Paul broke up with his longtime girlfriend and wanted to get out and try something different. He confided in me that he was sick of the club scene, bars were not his thing, and despite his mothers insistence, he was convinced he wouldn't find a date in church.

I convinced Paul to set up a couple of online profiles on dating sites to see what would happen. He made a few connections, but something still didn't seem right. He felt that for him, just putting up a profile wasn't enough, he wanted some adventure. I suddenly had an idea I thought he would like. Speed dating.

The first night I decided to hang in the background and give him some tips, since technology is not really his thing, I knew he might have some trouble trying to get romantic in front of a computer. The dates came and went, and Paul wasn't sure if he was making progress or not. A few interesting conversations arose from typos and such, but nothing solid yet.

The next round I left Paul to his own devices. I expected he would be calling me a couple of hours later with more bad news. Three hours later and no call from Paul. I decided to call it night. The next afternoon Paul calls me up and says he has some positive news to report. He made another horrible typo...that led to him hitting it off with a girl big time.

His typographical error led to some raucous laughter and a positive response from a girl named Tina. They began communicating over IM that evening and didn't stop until the sun was coming up. They made plans for brunch the next day and it went exceptionally well. They have been together for five months now. A simple experiment led to a blossoming relationship. The only problem is now, I rarely see Paul at any of the guys night out functions we have. Oh well, at least he is happy.
