Vintage Culture - January 2009

Michael Steele was today elected the first black chairman of the Republican National Committee.
The Former Lt. Governor of Maryland came out swinging today as he addressed his fellow Republicans.

"We're going to say to friend and foe alike: 'We want you to be a part of us, we want you to with be with us.' And for those who wish to obstruct, get ready to get knocked over," Steele said.

"There is not one inch of ground that we're going to cede to anybody," he added.

"This is the dawn of a new party moving in a new direction with strength and conviction."

If this is any indication of the new path the Republicans are going to take to counter the Obama hysteria that is sweeping the nation, I think they've picked a winner. This is the kind of action we have been needing to see from the GOP for years.

They need to fight hard to keep the bloated 'stimulus' bill that's just reached the senate from making it through. After the last few days, as more pork and un-stimulus like additions are brought to light this bill is looking more like the Democrats 'plan for revenge' than any bill that is designed to stimulate the economy.

****Nice, but not going to stimulate all that much of our economy.****
$544 billion in new spending

$125 billion for public education including $20 billion for school renovations and $79 billion to avoid education related layoffs

$87 billion for Medicaid

$30 billion goes to road projects

$27 billion to continue unemployment insurance benefits

$20 billion for food stamps

$20 billion to digitize medical records

$8 billion for renewable energies

$7 billion for modernizing federal buildings

$6 billion for mass transit

$5 billion for for the construction and repair of public housing

$4 billion for community activist programs such as ACORN

$2 billion for child care subsidies

$650 million for coupons for digital TV conversions

$400 million for global warming research

$335 million for STD prevention

$50 million for National Endowment of the Arts

****These could actually stimulate the economy.****

$275 billion in new tax cuts

$145 billion: Tax cuts for 95% of working Americans, $500 for individuals, $1000 for couples and small business for 2 years

$23 billion: $1000 per child tax credit

$20 billion for company equipment write offs

$16 billion in “green” tax credits

$10 billion: $2500 credit for college

$6.9 billion for homeowner tax credits

So there's a nice highlight for you. Only about 12% of this bill contains economy stimulating tax cuts, etc...

Remember this folks, this is YOUR money the government is spending.

Let's hope Michael Steele will 'stimulate' the Republicans into protecting our interests and stopping this spend fest before the dollar becomes so de-valued that Canada has a more powerful dollar than us.

The New Era Has Begun.

January 26th 2009 03:37
The world watched as America crowned a new King...err President. Now more than ever we need people with the constitution and the sense to keep a watchful eye on the White House and report what they see with an unbiased hand. The writers, bloggers, social network note slinging cowboys(and girls) are the pulse of the resistance. Keeping us informed of the truth so we do not fall victim to the trap of the mainstream liberal media.

I don't expect this blog to be ground zero of this new internet revolution, but my hope is it will inform, entertain, and maybe enlighten just a few of you. In that regard, I will have accomplished my goals as a writer and conservative freedom fighter.

Captain Kirk can't handle KHAAAAN!

January 23rd 2009 08:45
The Star Trek movies of the original series were well viewed, but never reached that flurry of popularity and merchandising that raised an entire empire around Star Wars.

One of the movies, though, is consistently praised as the best of the franchise: "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan", where Cap'n Kirk goes head-to-head against Khan Noonien Singh, and has this very popular scene:

How much do people love Khan? Well, so much that Google gets quite a few hits for the search of "KHAN", "KHAAN", "KHAAAN" and so on. Some clever bloke decided to graph the results of these searches based on how many 'A's were used:

Wrath of Khan how many As in KHAAAN

Sure, it's an exponential dropoff, like you'd expect, but some of the other peaks are quite mysterious... the peaks around the 40s? How about that big one at 81? What would make a person type in 81 As?

Well, it's not just KHAAAAN! that gets Cap'n Kirk's knickers in a twist - he's also got a bit of identity crisis going, where he can't stand the idea of someone misappropriating his name:

Now THAT'S good acting.

Hmmm - it's a type of acting that's gotten Shatner so much fame that other people have become famous just making fun of him, like Kevin Pollack:

Regardless of how many As we decide are in KHAAAAN! or how many impersonations we see of Cap'n Kirk, I'll always remember that my old university has a building named after William Shatner - immortality achieved by overacting.

Chuck Jones Moved Pictures

"Human beings will line up for miles to buy a bucket of catastrophes, but don't try selling sunshine and light -- you'll go broke."

A mind that exploded with satirical wit, a pair of hands capable of conjuring Daffy Duck, Foghorn Leghorn and Wile. E. Coyote amongst the slew of other Tweety bird icons. Within the lexicon of standard setting Animation Artists Chuck Jones is as revered and remembered as a thousand bugs bunny “What’s up Docs.

Serving as writer, producer and Director of some of the most well loved cartoon characters in history, this is the man whose madcap creative expressions were unleashed through the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies shorts of Warner Brothers Studio.

"The whole essence of good drawing—and of good thinking, perhaps—is to work a subject down to the simplest form possible and still have it believable for what it is meant to be."

The mirror of genius or genus?

Charles Martin "Chuck" Jones was born September 1912 in Spokane Washington. The family moved to Los Angeles California in his preteen years. Indirectly fuelling his illustrated passion from a young age was his father, a failed business man in the 1920’s. Starting a new venture always meant new stationary, as each one failed the pens, paper and peripherals went to the children. This meant that by the time Chuck began formally studying his vocation at Chouinard Art Institute he had managed to amass a wealth of practical sketching experience.

Starting his prolific career at the bottom washing cels at Ub Liwerks, Chuck did any work in animation that came his way. In 1933 the 21 year old became Assistant Animator at Leon Schlesinger Productions, an independent wing of Warner Brothers.

While there Jones would create some of his most recognized characters and also give the world classic cartoon shorts like the Bugs versus Elmer hunting trilogy Rabbit Fire, Rabbit Seasoning and Duck. Rabbit. Duck. A few other now reveered gems included Duck Dodgers in the 24th and a ½ Century, Duck Amuck, Beep Beep, What’s Opera Doc, One Froggy Evening and Who Scent You.

"The Coyote is limited, as Bugs is limited, by his anatomy. To give the Coyote a look of anticipatory delight, I draw everything up—the eyes are up, the ears are up, and even the nose is up. When he is defeated, on the other hand, everything turns down. You can’t do that as dramatically with human beings, although the emotions expressed are fully human."

Fired abruptly in 1962 for a technical breach of his exclusivity contract with Warner, CJ landed on his lucky rabbit’s foot and with business partner Les Goldman he opened his own animation house Sib Tower 12.

“You do not ‘suffer’ if you decide ‘that’s the way it is’ rather than ‘why is it this way?’

It was during this time that Jones revamped Tom and Jerry and also began working with Dr Suess, in 1966 he would make the Christmas gem The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. Later he would produce and offer his talents to the adaptation of Horton Hears a Who.

MGM who had offered him Tom and Jerry now also funded his dream project, The Phantom Tollbooth.

Sadly box office was unspectacular for his cinematic interpretation of the best selling children’s novel. Shortly after Metro Goldwyn Meyer shut down its animation house and this led to the birth of Chuck Jones Productions.

Doing TV Adaptations of many literary staples like The Jungle Book in 1979 he reunited with Bugs, Daffy and the gang for Looney, Looney, Bugs Bunny Movies which was like a greatest hits album of some of his legendary achievements.

In his later years Chuck Jones continued to be involved in the industry and as well as developing new projects he also began lecturing at universities and conferences to much enthusiasm. He died of heart failure in 2002, his final Looney Tune was From Hare to Eternity in 1997.

“There is absolutely no inevitability as long as there is the willingness to think.”

The evolution of Lego Men

January 9th 2009 07:33
Lego Men Mug shots Timeline
Ah, LEGO. The building blocks of childhood playtime, the centerpiece of fantasy and imagination, sadly displaced by shinier, plastic toys with blinking lights and holograms.

For me, though, LEGO was a necessity... it provided the tools to build spaceships of unimaginable ferocity, easily stronger than the limited lasers of Transformers, or the earth-bound Tonka Trucks
