Vintage Apple Ad

Classic vintage Apple ad center
Found on BoingBoing Gadgets, this classic magazine ad from Apple...

... do you remember the days when the Apple store didn't have counters or chairs, but had a cascade of rainbows to take you on a merry trip to a magical land of gumgrops eating fairies?

I do. And I'm depressed to go to the Apple Store now, with its clean, smooth design, the minimalist colours, the great interface. The knowledgeable staff - they get on my nerves. When I enter the store, fling rainbows in my face, man. Don't just stand there with your great hair and expect me to fork over the money.

Back in those days, you'd take your Apple IIe to get Oregon Trail installed. Then you and your bro would stay up, cackling at your electronic family, starving and weak. I used to drive Gramma pretty hard in those days, then we'd high five when she came down with dysentry. Kids can be so cruel, sometimes.

I liked the sweaters in those old Apple days. Steve Jobs used to wear turtlenecks and sweaters almost exclusively, it seemed, and the Woz had a sweater vest, ostentiously to cover his bear frame with some civilized clothes.

The Apple store is frightening now, and I don't blame old people for avoiding it. It's full of smug satisfaction and self-congratulatory sentiments. 'You deserve toi have a 40 GB video player, because you're special,' it seems to say.

Here's a compilation of old school TV ads from a younger Jobs:

Vintage Illustration of Futuristic City
I love these illustrations, notable for gracing the covers of magazines that tried to predict the future. Yes sir, back then, people knew we were going to have pneumatic tubes to whizz us around, like the Jetsons or Futurama.

And they knew we'd have fast trains shooting over highways, like in the picture above.

Ok, ok, that one came true.

What about robotic polo, played on water?

Sure, we could do it.. But who would want to? Admit it, that's a lame use of technology.

Sadly, we didn't create colonies on the moon, despite the insistence from Stephen Hawking. He's worried about nothing... as if we'd destroy the planet! Ha ha! You'd need a huge bomb to destroy the Earth, containing massive amount of energy in a tiny pellet of fuel. That's crazy talk!

Honestly, quite a few of the illustrations are dull... too many of them seem to be obsessed with watercraft. I'm sorry, but we have boats, and they work pretty well. I don't need a big bubble to roll my ass around the lake.

And, no, I don't need new ways to ski. We have skis and, now, snowboards. If I need more variety, I'll just slide down the mountain on my belly.
