Vintage 90210: The Magic Of Donna

July 29th 2006 01:20
Today, I would like to pay homage to the original (and the best) heiress. Not Paris, Nicky or Nicole, I talk of Donna Martin (a.k.a Tori Spelling, a.k.a Aaron Spelling’s spawn who he put on his very own TV show) the softly spoken BBF of Kelly who had a learning disability, nearly got expelled before graduating (for being drunk at Prom), was abused by boyfriend Ray, dated geeky-turned-hot David (who cheated on her), finally looses her virginity in 97 to David (the show started in 1990), was a weather girl on TV (and stalked because of it), finds a long-lost half sister and gets married in the last season of the show. I’de like to see Paris Hilton top that. Please, one fight with Lindsay Lohan and she’s all like “I’m THE most dramatic heiress ever”. But remember Donna.

But the most important indicator of how influential Donna wa is her ability to make us blindly stumble through so many outfits of questionable clothing. Paris has done her part (Von Dutch, hair extentions, small pets and fake tan) but its not nearly as deliberating or questionable as Donna’s fashion influence. This WAS the 1990s after all!

Taking Donna’s lead, high rise jeans became all the rage. And clearly she is a fan because the show went for nearly 10 years. That a REALLY long time to keep a trend. Maybe her Dad threatened to stop the wardrobe budget if they didn’t do what Donna wanted. I mean, they cant have actually thought those pants where flattering!

Not to mention this – which I think may be a jumpsuit OR a matching mid-rift and spandex pant combo. Oh the magic of spandex!

And here are some screen captures of Donna in action wearing what seems to be a doiley AND overalls. The girl has balls! Although it was slighlty worying that she didn’t have an awsome hair style like Branda Walsh (shannon Doherty) – that fringe really evolved over the seasons. Props to her for never giving up on the blunt fringe.

But I’d just like to send my love out to Donna for her pioneering heiress ways which nowadays goes unnoticed. We love you Donna

A while ago I wrote about what I would do if I ever won the lottery. However, startling new evidence has revealed that this is altogether, completely and utterly untrue!! I have just learned of the one thing that I would desperately what if only I could afford it!

The Ultimate Collector's Item!!

Any of these would also be fine.

Maybe I could afford a glove...doubt it.

Mischa Barton uncovers Bebe

July 27th 2006 05:16

Who was out and about recently but Mischa Barton (surprise surprise!). Apparently, she is in New York City doing a photo shoot for a clothing company she is “the face of”. The clothes are awesome! How mod are they? Mini shift dresses with boots? That cool newsboy cap? Its SO something a Beatle’s girlfriend would have worn (and I don’t mean a Beatle’s girlfriend who turned out to be a porn star, I mean one from the 60s!) For a second I thought it might be burberry, but then I remembered that Kate Moss is the burberry girl, so I decided to do some investigation into this retro clothing line!

I discover the label is “Bebe”. For the life of me, I cannot think of ever having heard of Bebe. So, I decide to investigate by popping over to style.com too look them up under the “fashion shows” category. (seriously, I love this website, and totally recommend that you should go on it.). So anyway, Bebe does not appear on the designer’s database on style.com. Hmmm.

Time to google.

And this is what I find.

Apparently the line is about Asian neon lights or something. But how much does it look like swinging London? The two are VERY different!!

Grace Kelly's High Society

July 26th 2006 12:50
Last Saturday, I discovered (to my delight) that channel nine have started showing old movies in the middle of the day for those of us who enjoy a lazy weekend! How wonderful that I discovered it on the day they where screening “High Society”. Naturally I have seen this movie before (many a time in fact) and of course loved it.

“High Society” stars Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby and is set in the affluent estates of America in the 1950s. The story follows Tracy (Grace Kelly) an ice-goddess who is about to be married for a second time to a safe business man. But her charming and lovable first husband (Bing Crosby) moves into the neighborhood determined to win her back. To add to the confusion, a magazine reporter (Frank Sinatra) has been sent to cover the wedding but he falls in love with Tracy too!

Grace and Frank!
Grace and Bing!

The movie is a wonderful musical, great comedy and has darling costumes for Grace Kelly. This was her last movie before she famously quit Hollywood to be Princess of Monaco. In this film, she looks every inch the Princess she was to become (she wore her engagement ring throughout the movie!).

Grace on her wedding day

For classic Grace inspiration, check out "High Society" and also "To Catch a Thief", which is set in the picturesque south of France and showcases some wonderful summer trends which are just so chic! May I suggest the silk scarf crossed under the chin with some cool shades?

"To Catch a Thief"
"To Catch a Thief"

Next week's movie is "Meet Me in St. Louis", a musical which stars Judy Garland. I haven't seen this before, but will be sure to catch it! Channel 9 at 1.30pm! Can't wait!

Isn't one Jessica Simpson enough?

July 25th 2006 12:54
The one thing to always love about vintage is its constant cycle of rejuvenation. Surely your mother has said, "I had a bag/belt/top/dress/pair of shoes just like that when I was a kid. I wish I had kept it." Which of course implies that the cycle is a long-term one. That it takes a considerable amount of time for people to forget how they so violently rebelled against wedges that they threw away in a "what was I thinking" bag sometime in the 80s and now act like amnesia patients at their awful crime against fashion and taste in general which is being perpetrated again. Although, I am not here to unload about the wedge. again.

THis being said, it is NOT a vintage statement to copy something that ended within the year. It is NOT a statement to copy something which nobody liked OR appreciated in the first place. It is NOT a statement to do it even worse that the horrible original. It is NOT a statement to dress up like Jessica Simpson

As the neurotic Annie Hall in 1977’s hit movie of the same name, Dianne Keaton sparked a fashion phenomenon with women everywhere copying Annie’s eccentric mix of masculine and feminine. Actually, the clothes Annie wears are all Keaton’s own and it is thanks to her that ties (a la Avril Lavigne), men’s shirts and vests entered the female closet.

Dressing up as Our Nic

July 19th 2006 14:12

Nicole Kidman is defiantly an icon of today, an example of a modern woman in style, fashion and beauty (but NOT taste in men!!). From her life with us down under, she has shot to fame in some of the most glamorous and exciting couture designs. Always dramatic, sometimes daring and mostly spot-on, Nicole K is as ‘old Hollywood’ as we get today.

As I always say, todays starlets are tomorrows icons. Well, I never say that, but it does make sense. So, naturally I have discovered Kate Bosworth and apparently, I am the last person to have done so. Prior to today, all I knew of Ms. Bosworth was that she dates Orlando Bloom and was in that surfing movie. However, in manner of Kirstin Dunst, she is staring in a comic book movie and now is bonafide "it girl"/starlet/standard fashion pallet.

Preppy

July 13th 2006 14:59
Preppy is a wonderful style that translates for women of all age groups. The preppy girl is simple, elegant, understated but ultimately, a true classic. Not a style that indulges in the fickle nature of trends, it requires a wardrobe full of things that will never go out of style and an attitude of taste and grace.

Kelly vs Birkin

July 12th 2006 15:45
Winning the lottery is divided into tiers of spending. Let me explain. If you just won a ridiculous amount of money, your purchases would probably be prioritized, and would probably start with the more expensive items. This is tier one. Teri one includes things like houses, snazzy cars, expensive holidays and expensive technology. Next things to consider would include gifts for family and friends and also some personal things that you have always wanted (which are usually not rational). For women this might be a whole closet filled with shoes. For men, it might be a yacht and a captain’s hat. For me, it is a Hermes bag. Yes, just one is all I am asking for. Well, two actually, a Kelly and a Birkin.

You might be puzzled as to why I should wait until winning the lottery before purchasing said bag(s). It is because this bag(s) has a price tag of about $5000 (not for both, just for one. For both, this would be $10 000). No, I didn’t add any extra zeros to the end of that number, a leather cavity with handles on either side ACTUALLY costs that mush. And people all over the world ACTUALLY buy them. There are waiting lists. Yes, people wait on a list to buy a bag which will cost them the amount of a car

A vintage

July 11th 2006 15:16
LOVE STORY...

Set in New York City, it is a great romance between two young colledge students who are struggle with their lives outside the safety net of family and school. Seriously, it was as heart wrenching as Romeo and Juliet with disaproveinf in-laws, fatal diseases and fiancail instability (maybe not the last one). And if this sounds familiar "Love means never having to say you're sorry", it's probably from this movie (I also heard its in the bible, but whatever). This was the 70s version of our "To me you are perfect" (Mr. Darcy of "Bridget Jones' Diary").

Chanel No. 5.254???

July 10th 2006 14:25
I was talking to my friend Sally yesterday who is of the opinion that Chanel is over. THis is a VERY BIG statement. I simply adore Chanel (not that I can afford it!), and I can’t possibly comprehend what she means. I say this to her and she clarifies that she doesn’t thinks its OVER over, but rather that its just not as cutting edge as it used to be. She thinks its clothes are still fab and trendy (I mean if Mischa Barton has a Chanel bag practically glued to her arm, it cant be unfashionable can it?) but so is Marc, Oscar, Michael, Ralph, Carolina and Christian (that’s Jaccobs, de la Renta, Kors, Lauren, Herrera and Dior).

But really, doesn’t history count for ANYTHING anymore

The First Ladies of Rock

July 9th 2006 12:38
My absolute, all-time favorite band is The Rolling Stones. The perennial counterculture trend setters, they have always embraced the unconventional with nonchalance. But what I love most about the Stones (besides their awesome music) is their first ladies of rock (I speak of their many girlfriends and wives).

The first lot don’t really have that much to offer, of course at the time the boys where still in Beatle-style suits. I call them the pre-generation (Chrissie Shrimpton and Linda Keith

Lost in Translation

July 8th 2006 15:06
Dear Jessica Simpson,

I cant remember the last time you sung anything and it was at least a year ago that you “acted” in anything, so why cant I get away from you? You haven’t DONE anything but you are in every stupid magazine I open. If all you do is go to benefits/premieres/award shows etc am I to presume that editors are STILL running pictures of you because of what you are wearing

The divine Ms. H

July 2nd 2006 14:15
I know that I am being terribly unoriginally when I say that in my opinion, Audrey Hepburn is THE iconic woman of the last centaury. She is universally proclaimed muse, inspiration, influence and hero to many in the culture of beauty, fashion and generally looking good! On all accounts, Miss H is the absolute epitome of chic.

As soon as she breezed down a New York street in the opening credits for “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” in a floor-skimming black frock, stacks of pearls, black gloves, a glamorous up-do and oversized, movie-star sunglasses, she unwillingly threw a pebble in the metaphorical pond of pop culture, with the ripples still touching our shores today
