Vintage Culture - June 2006

A recent UK magazine pole found that women think that Kate Moss and Sienna Miller’s styles are most influential. I love both of them myself and I always love what they wear – but WHY? Its because they are different. They wear things you wouldn’t EXPECT.

I have a neighbor who is 13 (yes, this is relevant). She is the typical ‘Dolly’ reading, Lindsay Lohan loving, Summer Bay watching type. And she LOVES both Kate and Sienna with a passion. Of course, she is far too young to realize that Kate and Sienna’s looks are so timeless is because they are re-inventions of old classics.

She thinks Sienna Miller is being daring when she wears black opaque tights under a short mini (um, can someone say Eddie Sedgwick?).

She thinks Kate Moss’ dark eyes and tussled hair are like, sooo ‘signature’ (signature to a certain Ms. Bardot – and not the band).

She also thinks the OC is groundbreaking TV (lest we forget Joey and Dawson, not to mention Brandon and Brenda). She thinks the Rouge Trader’s music is the best she’s ever heard (probably because she HAS heard it before. Elvis Costello. Jimi Hendrix.) – ok, that wasn’t exactly relevant…

I don’t mean to sound old and boring (I am a teenager) but if you want to be a style setter like Kate and Sienna, why don’t you look at some old inspiration? Old movies, movie stars, rock stars and models all had awesome style that is probably forgotten today. No one will know where the idea come from and will give you total credit!

If you don’t want to be too avant guard in discovering the past, you could keep in the same vein as Kate Moss by checking out some other Bardot trademarks like full-skirts, oversized headbands, boots and scarves.

You might be able to find something that really IS original, instead of just being another Kate Clone.

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU

Doesn’t it seem like only minutes ago you where screeching in offence when you discovered you mothers 70s cork wedges tucked away in her nostalgic boxes of horded clothes? And now it seems that your firm anti-wedge campaign is crumbling as Sienna Miller appears in Who weekly stepping out in a snazzy pair of her own (TWICE?!?!)?

AND

Well, maybe her huge shoe closet got burned down in a freakish accident. Maybe it was a dare (although I doubt someone like Sienna would think fashion was a joke). Denial is the first stage my dear. Rage is the second. WHY SIENNA, WHY??? I LOOKED UP TO YOU. YOU WHERE MY OBI WAN. MY.FRICKING.OBI.WAN. And then acceptance. Although I would never personally buy a pair of wedges, I accept that others do. I accept that others find them cool and would wear them out in public.

So that’s how its gonna be. Fine. I can roll with the times. And trust me, it hasn’t been all bad. I positively skip whenever I hear any and every celebrity under the sun proclaim smugly that their dress is vintage because they “like wearing what no one else has”. It has bought back all the glamour we loved but got lost in the grunge of the 90s flannel shirts and overalls.
